PORTLAND, Maine - Olympian Julia Clukey is accustomed to traveling on a sled at over 90 miles per hour and on Monday night she got a chance to show off her speed in a different sport with her fastball. The Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, provided Olympian Julia Clukey the opportunity to throw the first pitch of the game between the Sea Dogs and the Harrisburg Senators as a way to honor the Olympian for her community involvement and her athletic accomplishments.
Clukey, 26, from Augusta, Maine, competed in luge competition at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and will compete in World Cup competitions this winter. She has also already announced plans to participate in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
During the past two years, Olympian Julia Clukey has been involved in the community as a spokesperson for the Maine Beer & Wine Distributors Association as part of their ongoing responsibility initiative. Julia has spread her personal message of responsibility across Maine with television and radio appearances, public service announcements and by presenting at several high schools. Since 2009, her message of responsibility and good decision making has reached more than 4,000 Maine students.
"It's very important to me to find ways to give back to the community and the Maine Beer & Wine Distributors Association has helped me do that. As a Mainer, having the opportunity to meet and inspire the young people across Maine is something I've always wanted to do," said Olympian Julia Clukey.
The school presentations are made possible by the Maine Beer & Wine Distributors Association at no cost to the schools. Schools and community organizations can request a presentation from Olympian Julia Clukey by visiting www.mainebeerandwine.com/responsibility.
As part of her appearance at the game, Julia Clukey signed autographs and posed for pictures with children and fans. She was also featured on the videoboard with a message for fans about the importance of responsibility. Later this month, she will be part of public service announcements from the Maine Beer & Wine Distributors Association about the importance of responsibility and good decision making heading into Labor Day weekend. The PSAs will air on radio stations across the state.
