Friends,

Cheryl TimberlakeHAPPY SUMMER! It's official, both the calendar and weather indicate summer has arrived in Maine. Summer is a short season, so take the time to enjoy your vacations, outdoor activities, weddings, reunions and, of course, our great seasonal food and beverages here in Vacationland.

As we prepare for the July 4th holiday with family and friends, it is important to remember to be safe; wear life jackets when on the water, use sun screen when you are outside and, if your event includes alcohol, please make good decisions and be responsible.

As you plan to fire up the grill this weekend, be sure to check out our grilling safety tips this month and click the link to the left for a recipe from Olympian Julia Clukey!

Delivering Quality and Choice. Advocating Responsibility.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Timberlake
Executive Vice President

Summer Grilling Safety Tips

Did you know? Outdoor grilling accidents account for 7,900 home fires and 19,000 emergency room visits each year. We encourage you to be responsible and review the following tips to keep you and your guests safe this summer.

Grill safelyFire. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher available and you are familiar with how it works. One person should always be in charge of the grill at all times.

Food Safety. Bacteria grows on all food, so make sure you cover everything and put the appropriate food in the refrigerator.

Location. Ensure that your grill is away from your home, garage or other structure. Also, be sure to look overhead to see if there are any obstructions such as wires or tree branches.

Gas Safety. The number one cause of gas grill fires is a block in the fuel path. Inspect your grill regularly before use to make sure there are no potential problems.

Charcoal Safety. Lighting the charcoal is a dangerous job. Reading the instructions for igniting the charcoal is an important step to prevent injury. Lighter fluid is often a dangerous way to start up your grill. Be careful.
